Cours international

1st course "From Pigment Cells to Melanomas" - 2012

In humans, pigment cells comprise the neural crest-derived melanocytes and the pigmented retina cells. Tumor transformation in both cell types results in cutaneous or uveal melanomas, two usually aggressive and hard-to-treat tumour types.

This course will address the development, the differentiation and the migratory behaviour of melanocytes in embryos and melanoma formation and metastasis in adults. Focus will be made on cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling these processes. The course will then address how advanced imaging technologies, systems biology, and in vivo approaches have progressed in melanoma understanding in the last few years. Finally, some directions for therapeutic approaches will be developped. In the practical part of this course, the notions developped in the seminars and courses will be illustrated by in vivo manipulations in embryos and in vitro cellular manipulation, both followed by advanced imaging analysis.

Organizers: Anne-Hélène Monsoro-Burq, Patrick Pla, Simon Saule, Morgane Locker, Odile Bronchain

Master 2 students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows with a scientific background are invited to apply to the course. Seminars and talks will be in english.

Course format: Seminars (1 week, 5 ECTS) and Practical Course (3 weeks, 5ECTS).

Corresponding ECTS will be validated for Université Paris Sud-11 students or students from other universities with a suitable agreement with Université Paris Sud-11. For organisational reasons, the attendance to both the practical and the theoretical course is limited to 12 students in 2012, and the attendance to the theoretical course only is limited to another 25 students in 2012.
Additionally, doctoral students will be able to validate these seminars for their graduate program in agreement with their doctoral school of origin. Attendance certificates will be issued for all participants. For details, please contact the organizers.

This course is validated by the Genes, Genomes and Cells (GGC) doctoral school.

Applications are to be filled on line on the Institut Curie website. Selection criteria will include the applicant’s CV, master grades, and motivation letter.

Selected applicants for the seminar course only, will present an article in relationship with the seminars, in presence of the invited speakers. Participants of the practical course will present a research proposal at the end of the course. Articles and research themes will be distributed about a month before the beginning of the course.

Registration closed.

Practical course: 3 - 13 and 23 - 31 January, 2012 / Theoretical course: 9 and 16 - 20 January, 2012
