Completing a PhD at Institut Curie 

Eligibility

What are the eligibility criteria?
The applicants must:
- not have lived in France for more than 12 months during the past 3 years prior to February 5th, 2017 (COFUND Mobility rule)
- have a Master’s degree (or be about to obtain one) or have a university degree equivalent to a European Master’s (5-year duration) to be eligible.
-  have obtained this degree no more than 2 years prior to February 5th, 2017.

What are the nationalities who can apply?
We welcome applicants from all nationalities, provided they meet the eligibility criteria.

If I have done my university studies outside of France but will earn my Master’s degree from a French institution, am I eligible?
Yes, if you have not have lived or worked in France for more than 12 months during the past 3 years. The reference date is the application deadline, February 5th, 2017

I have obtained my Master’s degree in February 2015, can I apply?
Yes, applicants are eligible if they have obtained their Master’s degree in 2015, 2016 or will obtain their Master’s degree before September 30, 2017. 

Is it possible to apply if I have not obtained my Master’s degree (or equivalent) yet?
Yes, applications can be submitted before obtaining the degree but you must have obtained your degree on September 30, 2017 to be eligible.

Is there an age limit to apply?
There is no age restriction to apply for the IC-3i International PhD Program.

Are there specific language requirements to apply for the IC-3i PhD program?
The working language at Institut Curie is English, it is not required to speak French. Thus, proficiency in written and fluency in oral English are required as the whole program is run in English. PhD fellows can attend French classes at their arrival.

Are reference letters required for my application? How many?
Yes, 2 recommendation letters are required for your application. Your 2 referees have to upload themselves their letter before the end of the call so that your application is complete. Please note: a third reference letter will not be accepted.

How will I know if my application is eligible?
Applicants who have submitted ineligible applications will be informed in March.

Eligible applications will go through the 1st round selection by the Review Board. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for the interview session in May (2nd round selection).

Are there any requirements regarding the recommendation letters?

Yes, applicants should inform their referees to upload their recommendations letters before the application deadline (February 8th, 2017 at 5 :00pm CET). The recommendations letters must be written on headed paper and bear a stamp and the signature of the referees.


Application process

What is the application process?
After the end of the call, eligibility of applications will be checked. Eligible applications will be evaluated by the Review Board (1st round selection). Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview (2nd round selection).

When does the application begin?

The call for applications opens mid-December 2016.
 
What is the deadline to apply?
Applications can be submitted until February 8th, 2017, 17:00 CET (GMT +1)
 
Is there an application fee?
No, there is no application fee.

Do I need to contact a thesis director with whom I wish to work before applying?
It is not mandatory but feel free to contact the Thesis Director of the project you are applying for.

How many PhD thesis projects can I apply for?
You can apply for 1 PhD project.
 
How can I appeal the decision of the 1st & 2nd round of selection?
Please write an email to ic3iphd@curie.fr within one week after the email with results that has been sent to you.
 
If I am unsuccessful for the 2017 call, can I apply for the next call?
Yes, if you meet the eligibility criteria.

 How do I Apply?
Fill in the online application form through the online application system. Once you have submitted your application, you will be notified by email and will be able to download an acknowledgment of receipt. Downloading your acknowledgment of receipt will enable you to prove that your application has been submitted.
 
Can I modify my application? How?
You can modify your application file via the online application system until the end of the call.
 
Can I check the status of my application?
Yes, this is possible with the application system.
 
I have problems with the online application system. What should I do?

Required documents

Do I need to have my degrees and transcripts translated into English for the application?
Yes, you can translate them yourself.
 
Can I upload my CV (pdf, word format for example) directly onto the online application system ?
No, this is not possible. You will have to fill all the required fields of your CV in the online application system.
 
Can I upload my recommendation letters?
No, your referees have to upload the letters themselves before the application deadline. It is your duty to check if your referees have uploaded the letters so that your application is complete. Applicants must inform their referees that the recommendation letters have to be written on headed paper, bear a stamp and their signatures.

Are there any requirements regarding the recommendation letters?

Yes, applicants should inform their referees to upload their recommendations letters before the application deadline (February 8th, 2017 at 5 :00pm CET). The recommendations letters must be written on headed paper and bear a stamp and the signature of the referees. 

Will I be informed once the referees have completed their references?
Yes, you can check this via the online application system.


Interview

When and how will I receive notification regarding interviews?
Applicants invited for the interviews will be contacted by email after the 1st round of selection.

International applicants willing to apply for the IC-3i PhD Program should inquire beforehand about the visa procedure regarding their country, in preparation for the interview session in Paris.

Following the interview, when will I be notified of acceptance into the IC-3i PhD Program?

Applicants will be contacted by email after the 2nd round of selection.
 
What are the criteria used by the Review Board and the Selection committee to assess applications?
Applicants will be evaluated on their education, professional experience and personal experience.
Please note that English knowledge will be evaluated.
 
When will the interview stay in Paris take place?
The interview will last 3 days from May 17th to 19th, 2017.
 
What are the expenses covered for the interview stay at Institut Curie?
Travel, accommodation and lunches will be covered by Institut Curie.


Completing a PhD at Institut Curie

If I am selected in the IC-3i International PhD program, when do I start my PhD?
Selected candidates will start their PhD on October 2nd, 2017
 
What is the duration of the program?
The PhD fellowship is awarded for 3 years.
 
Can I extend the duration of my thesis?
Yes, it is possible to extend the duration of the thesis for a maximum of 1 year with additional funding. If needed, your thesis director will help you find additional funding.

If I am selected in the IC-3i International PhD program, will I have to register at a French university?
Yes, PhD fellows will be employed by Institut Curie and registered at a Doctoral School and at a French University. The university awards the PhD degree.
 
What do I need to register at a French university?
This depends on your university affiliation. This information will be provided by your thesis Director.
 
Who will deliver the PhD degree?
The university of the PhD fellow will deliver the PhD degree.
 
How do I prepare my entry in France?
Institut Curie’s Human resources Department will help you prepare your entry in France.
 
What is the monthly gross salary of the IC-3i PhD students?
2100€ including the doctoral mission.
 
What is a doctoral mission?
This is a mission of training, expertise or consultancy that is done during the thesis and enables the PhD student to develop new skills.

Is health care included in the salary?
Yes, health care is included in the salary.
 
Does Institut Curie provide financial support for the family?
No, there is no additional financial support for family members.
 
Does Institut Curie allow part-time enrolment?
No.
 
How do I go about finding accommodation?
Housing is provided for those who wish so: Institut Curie has reserved rooms for IC-3i PhD fellows at the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris (CIUP). The PhD fellow pays the monthly rent at the CIUP (about 600€).
