1st Real-Time Virtual International Course at Institut Curie

3rd Institut Curie International Course on Computational Systems Biology of Cancer:
EMBO|FEBS Lecture Course ‘Cancer systems biology: Promises of artificial intelligence
Real-time virtual

The U900 research unit, in collaboration with the Training Unit, organized the first real-time virtual international course during September 27 and October 2, 2020. Inna Kuperstein and Emmanuel Barillot were the main scientific organizers. This course was co-sponsored and co-organized with EMBO/FEBS, being also the first real-time virtual EMBO|FEBS Lecture Course.

This 5-day event, informally named @SysBioCancer Course by the organizers, included 25 international speakers and had around 200 participants from 31 countries. All 5 continents were represented. This virtual edition was accessible to a wider range of people worldwide, which had an extremely positive impact on the visibility of Institut Curie’s Research Center outside Europe.

The participants were carefully pre-selected according to their scientific profile from more than 300 applicants, and participation was free-of-charge.

Photo 01 – Group photos

Group photos – Despite technological constraints, we tried an unconventional photo group with our participants, organizers and invited speakers.

The virtual environment created by the organizers allowed to run a full-frame course, with activities that facilitated science discussion and professional connections to happen between participants, speakers and organizers.

Course activities were prepared via Microsoft Teams and participants could also interact through Zapnito platform, a resource made available by FEBS.

Some of the activities included virtual poster sessions, webinars on Selected Abstracts, keynote webinars, a Career Development Session…

Poster Sessions

Poster Sessions - “Meet the Speaker” activity – Our participants had one hour to showcase their work to other visiting participants and speakers. A new virtual experience to many of them!

….as well as a few more informal occasions in the form of “Meet The Speaker”, where speakers were available to exchange with participants, just like “the old coffee breaks” or “Aperos” in the evening, where participants gathered around drinks & music!

The preparation of this course and day-to-day logistics implicated many people behind the screens, working hard for months. This was a rich experience and we would like to thank all the students, researchers and other people that gave their time to make it happen!

The feedback from the participants and speakers was very positive and encouraging. Lessons learnt during this event will allow us to adapt to a new reality and new possibilities, when it comes to the future of advance training in a research environment.

Meet the Speaker activity

Participants had the chance to interact more closely with several speakers, asking questions not only about science but also about professional development!
