Un des problèmes fondamentaux en biologie concerne la relation qui existe entre les différentes échelles temporelles et spatiales dont dépend le fonctionnement de nombreux systèmes biologiques. De la molécule à la cellule, d’un amas cellulaire à un organisme, des interactions complexes entre constituants élémentaires donnent naissance à des propriétés « émergentes » pour le système pris dans son ensemble. Peut-on comprendre le comportement d’un système complexe biologique à partir des propriétés des éléments qui le constituent ?
